2020 Season Preview Interviews Updated August 30
|
Pierce Cousins, senior 2019
3A state meet: All-state 12th 14:39.23
Q: What things
are you most excited about this season?
“I am really excited about the new meet schedules.
A lot of people might have complaints that we’re not
having as many big meets but I’m kind of excited
because it’s a new design and it kind of brings a cool
finality to our season, our cross country senior
career, everything. I feel really excited to compete
individually and as a team against another individual
and another team."
Q: How would you evaluate the 2019 state meet? "Our state experience was a little
sad as a team because we did not qualify at sectionals. It was close. We missed it by six points. I learned certainly a lot
how the whole team’s important in bringing everybody down but I still did get to compete at the state meet and that
was really fun because I ran 12th in state and that was awesome and I PRed (achieved a personal record) and it was all good
news and now I’m a top runner and hoping to bring home a state title for my school so I feel I have really grown a lot
since then and I hope to prove everyone right."
Q: Do you and your teammates feel fortunate to have a cross country
season? “Of course I feel fortunate to have a cross country season. Compared to a lot of other teams, I’m
extremely fortunate that we have a cross country season and meets and potentially the possibility of a state series or state
meet. Yes, extremely fortunate."
Q:
How do you feel you’ve progressed since last
season? "I feel like I’ve progressed physically more
than any other year. My workouts have been getting
significantly less challenging for me -- not easier but
I’ve been able to accomplish them and do more than
I’ve ever done in workouts. Physically I’ve been
getting bigger. Mentally, obviously it’s been a
challenge with everything’s that happened with
COVID but I feel that I’ve really seen a progress of
my mental strength and fortitude as shown in my
practices."
Q:
How do you feel the altered schedule with affect the
team and you?
“What I’ve seen so far is that with the shortened
schedule we’ve been working a lot more speedwork
than normal preparing for the end of the year and
we’re probably going to start tapering off a little
sooner but what I think is the most important
thing is we have those dual meets and those dual
meets are now critical. They used to be like, well,
run a workout, you run hardest maybe but now they
could be the deciding factor between winning
conference or not, depending on how COVID goes.
So I think it kind of increases the pressure and also
makes it so much more interesting to compete
against all of these teams."
Q:
What did you and the team learn from last year’s
seniors?
"I would say that the most important lesson I learned
from that class was to enjoy every race that we have
and every practice that we have because our senior
class that just graduated had Andrew Malek and Jeff
Johnston and a couple of other guys and they
missed out on their track season and it was sad
because they were going to be really, really good this
year and we were all going to be really good this
year. What I know now is I’m going to appreciate
every meet from a small dual to a potential state-
level meet. I’ll enjoy every one until I won’t have
anymore left."
Q: Especially as a senior, how do you hope to help the team from a leadership standpoint?
“I am a senior and I’m a team captain. I believe I will help the team by showing an example of a student-
athlete. What I mean by that is that I would show them how to compete and how to prepare their minds for the stress and struggles
they’re going to have on the field and on the course but also the stress and struggles from school and how you have
to manage those and keep a healthy diet and manage everything else so that way you keep that balance and you keep helping
the team."
